Our Objectives

Short Term

- To raise awareness amongst the general public of the issues surrounding Down’s Syndrome and to emphasise the value and potential of children with the syndrome.

- To provide support and information for new and existing parents and family members of children with Down’s Syndrome by :
Keeping up to date contact details of existing and new members.
Supplying leaflets and literature explaining Down’s Syndrome to interested parties.
Notifying all interested parties about our support group coffee mornings.

- To provide private specialist speech and language therapy at a subsidised rate (where funds permit) to all members to enhance the communication of their child with Down’s Syndrome
through the use of Makaton sign language.

 
 

- To provide a library of books, leaflets and software on related topics for members to borrow.

Long Term

- To provide half day speech and language therapy workshops, to include a greater number and age range of children, to be provided by two speech and language therapists, incorporating the teaching of reading and writing skills, through a specialist approach.

- To fund training courses and seminars for members, at The Down’s Syndrome Educational Trust at The University of Portsmouth and similar placements, thereby increasing the knowledge on educational issues of the group.

- To subsidise attendance to meetings of the national Down’s Syndrome Association and similar bodies to hear keynote speakers on Down’s Syndrome related topics.
